Goodman Furnace F02: Blower Speed Number, Not an Error
F02 is not a Goodman fault code. It is a blower speed number: speed 2 of the nine the control offers, F01 to F09. Goodman's *M9S96 and *M9C96 manuals spell it out in their status menus, "( xx: Blower Speed Number F01, F02.. )" (IOG-2029A p. 41; IOG-2027B p. 44), and the *M9S80*U menu lists "F01 - F09" for each blower setting (IOG-2031A p. 19). You see F02 when someone is in the settings menu choosing or checking a speed. On the *M9S96 single-stage heating table it is also the default heating speed.

Where F01 to F09 appear in Goodman's menus
Each blower mode has its own menu item, and choosing it shows the current speed as F followed by two digits. The rows below are the blower-speed items from each manual's menu table, as printed; the other items in those menus are settings and history, covered further down.
| Series | Main menu | Menu description (verbatim) | Option shown | Note or default (verbatim) | Manual, page |

| *M9S80*U | HP2 | Blower Speed for 2nd Stage HP Heat Mode | F01 - F09 | Default: Model specific | IOG-2031A, p. 19 |
The speed-selection steps say the same thing in prose. The *M9S96: "Press the left or right switch until LED displays “FSd”. Press the center switch and LED will display the selected speed number as Fxx (xx: Blower speed number from 1 to 9). F01 is the default speed for circulation." (IOG-2029A p. 35). The *M9S80*U: "Press option button and LED will display the currently selected speed number as Fxx (xx: Blower speed number from 1 to 9)." (IOG-2031A p. 22)
Which speed is the default
Defaults differ by series and by mode, which is one reason the same F number does not mean the same airflow everywhere. Goodman's tables mark the default speed for each thermostat call.
| Series and mode | Goodman's wording (verbatim) | Manual, page |
|---|---|---|
| *M9S96, heating (W/W1), "Heating Speed Table for 1 Stage IFC" | F01, F02 (DEFAULT), F03, F04 | IOG-2029A, p. 35 |
| *M9S96, continuous fan (G) | "F01 is the default speed for circulation." | IOG-2029A, p. 35 |
| *M9C96, continuous fan (G) | "SP3 is default speed for circulation."; table: F03 (DEFAULT) | IOG-2027B, p. 39 |
| *M9S80*U, continuous fan (FSd) | Default: F01 | IOG-2031A, p. 19 |
So on a single-stage *M9S96, F02 is the speed the control uses for heating unless someone has changed it. The *M9S96 note on the same page reads: "NOTE: Always refer to the Heating Chart to choose from available heating speeds".
What F02 means in airflow
An F number is an index into a model-specific airflow table, not a fixed amount of air. Each of these manuals has tables that list the airflow, in CFM, for F01 to F09 at a range of external static pressures, separately for each cabinet size. Those tables are on pp. 35–38 of IOG-2027B ("Airflow Table GM9C96" and "GC9C96"), pp. 45–50 of IOG-2029A ("Airflow Tables" for the *C9S96, *M9S92 and *M9S96), and pp. 30–31 of IOG-2031A.
Picking a speed is an installer's job. The *M9S80*U wiring diagram says so in note 3: "BLOWER SPEEDS SHOULD BE ADJUSTED BY INSTALLER TO MATCH THE INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS SO AS TO PROVIDE THE CORRECT HEATING TEMPRATURE RISE AND THE CORRECT COOLING CFM." (IOG-2031A p. 32) The same manual adds: "The selected speed must provide a temperature rise within the rise range listed with the particular model." (p. 22)
How to find the real fault code
Faults on these furnaces are not F codes. Two items in the same menus are where the control reports them, and both show the code as E followed by two characters.
| Main menu | Menu description (verbatim) | Option shown | Note (verbatim) | Manual, page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Err | Active Alarm menu (*M9S96); Active Alaram menu (*M9C96) | Exx | ( xx: code numbers ) | IOG-2029A p. 41; IOG-2027B p. 44 |
| L6F | Last 6 Faults | Exx | ( xx: code numbers ) | IOG-2029A p. 41; IOG-2027B p. 44 |
| Er r | Display Active Alarm (*M9S80*U) | — | — | IOG-2031A, p. 19 |
| L6F | Display Last 6 Faults (*M9S80*U) | — | — | IOG-2031A, p. 19 |
The codes that show up there, such as EE2 or E11, are explained series by series on the Goodman furnace codes hub, and the pressure-switch codes have their own page. The idle reading, 1dL, and the gas-heat status, 9H, are not faults either.
Goodman's safety wording
Blower settings are made at the furnace's control board, among the gas and electrical parts of the appliance. Goodman prints its gas-leak instruction on p. 3 of IOG-2029A, IOG-2027B and IOG-2031A; it is here verbatim with the carbon monoxide warning.
| Goodman's wording (verbatim) | Source |
|---|---|
| "WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS: • Do not try to light any appliance. • Do not touch any electrical switch; do not use any phone in your building. • Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone. Follow the gas supplier’s instructions. • If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire department." | IOG-2031A, p. 3 |
| "Possible property damage, personal injury or death due to fire, explosion, smoke, soot, condensation, electrical shock or carbon monoxide may result from improper installation, repair operation, or maintenance of this product." | IOG-2011U, p. 3 |
Frequently asked questions
What does F02 mean on a Goodman furnace?
It is blower speed number 2. Goodman's display furnaces number their blower speeds F01 to F09, and F02 appears when a blower speed is being viewed or chosen in the menu. It is not an error code.
Is F02 the same as F2 on other brands?
Not necessarily. This page covers Goodman's own menus only; other manufacturers use their own code lists, and an F-number fault on another brand says nothing about a Goodman furnace.
Why is my Goodman furnace display showing F02?
The display shows the Fxx speed while a blower menu (FSd, AC1, AC2, gAF and, on the *M9S80*U, HP1 and HP2) is open. If no one is changing settings, the menu may have been left open. The *M9S80*U manual describes these as menus "for furnace setup & settings" (IOG-2031A p. 18).
Should I change the blower speed on my Goodman furnace?
The *M9S80*U wiring diagram says blower speeds "SHOULD BE ADJUSTED BY INSTALLER", to give the correct heating temperature rise and cooling airflow. Speeds index model-specific airflow tables, and checking the rise is a measurement for a qualified servicer.
