Choose an appliance (the wattage table is the same one the generator calculator uses) or type in the watts from the nameplate, tell it how many hours a day it runs, pick your state, and read the cost. The rate for each state is the average residential price from the U.S. Energy Information Administration's most recent monthly table; the national average is the default. Compressor appliances — refrigerators, ACs, dehumidifiers — cycle on and off, so there's a duty-cycle slider to keep the answer honest.

How this calculator works

Watts ÷ 1,000 × hours = kilowatt-hours; kilowatt-hours × your rate = dollars. The only judgment calls are the rate and the duty cycle. The rate is EIA's state average for residential customers, which folds in the fixed charges and riders on a typical bill, so it's usually a little above the per-kWh number printed on yours; use the override box if you know your marginal rate. Duty cycle matters for anything with a thermostat: a window AC "running 8 hours" is drawing full power for perhaps 5 of them.

State rates in this table

The table under the tool lists all 50 states, DC, and the US average with the data month. Hawaii is the outlier at the top; the Pacific Northwest, the Mountain West, and much of the South sit well under the national average. The CSV behind it is replaced when EIA publishes the next monthly table, and the "data updated" line on this page changes with it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to run a space heater?

A 1,500 W heater for 8 hours is 12 kWh; at the US average of 18.44 ¢ (May 2026) that's about $2.21 a day, or $66 a month. In Texas (16.44 ¢) it's $1.97 a day; in California (33.25 ¢) $3.99.

How much does it cost to run a window AC?

A 12,000 BTU unit at roughly 1,100 W, 8 hours a day with a 60 % duty cycle, is about 5.3 kWh/day — roughly $1 a day at the national average, $30 a month.

How much does it cost to run a dehumidifier?

A 50-pint unit at about 470 W, 12 hours a day at 70 % duty, is about 4 kWh/day — around 73 ¢ a day at the national average.

Where does the rate come from?

EIA's Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A (average residential price by state), latest data month shown on the page. It's an average across all residential customers in the state, not your utility's tariff.

How much electricity does an average US home use?

EIA's FAQ puts it at about 10,800 kWh a year — roughly 900 kWh a month — with Louisiana highest and Hawaii lowest. The calculator shows your appliance's share of that.
