Space Heater Keeps Shutting Off
First decide which of two completely different things is happening. If the heater stops and starts again by itself on a rhythm, that is the thermostat cycling and it is what the thermostat is for — Lasko's manual describes the unit "cycling ON and OFF" to hold the set temperature, and Lasko even has a name for the brief restarts people notice: "air sampling." If the heater stops and stays stopped until you unplug it, that is a protective shutdown. Every manual we checked requires an unplug-and-cool cycle to clear an overheat trip — Lasko says 10 minutes, Vornado says 5 to 10. That single difference, whether it restarts on its own, tells you which page of the manual you are on.

Is my heater cycling or shutting down?
A cycling heater turns off when the room reaches the set temperature and comes back on when it drops, over and over, with no action from you. A protective shutdown stops the heater and keeps it stopped. Lasko's manual describes the normal case: "The Heater will now automatically maintain the desired comfort level by cycling ON and OFF," and for continuous heat, "set the thermostat towards (+)." The CT32150's Auto-Eco mode puts a number on it — high below the set point, low at it, off once the room exceeds the set point by 2 °F.
Lasko's support portal covers the variant that worries people most, where a heater already at temperature briefly runs for ten or fifteen seconds. Lasko calls this "air sampling" — the thermostat "sampling the ambient room temperature to obtain an accurate reading" — and describes it as "perfectly normal."

What are the automatic shutoffs, and how do I reset each one?
There are two, they trip for different reasons, and they clear in different ways — which is why "reset your heater" is bad advice without saying which. The overheat cutoff responds to temperature inside the cabinet and requires the unit to be unplugged and cooled. The tip-over switch responds to the unit not being upright and clears by itself the moment you stand it back up.
Overheat cutoff. Lasko's 5307 manual: "A thermal overload protector is built in to prevent overheating. If an overheat temperature is reached, the Heater will automatically shut off." The reset is prescriptive — "Unplug the Heater and wait 10 minutes for the unit to cool down," then plug it back in and start it normally. The CD08200 adds the decisive detail that it "can only resume operation when the unit is reset," so it is not going to come back on its own no matter how long you wait. Vornado's VMH300 describes the trigger from the airflow side: "If airflow becomes blocked, power to heater is shut off to prevent overheating," and asks for 5 to 10 minutes of cooling with obstructions cleared.
Tip-over switch. Vornado: "If heater tips over, safety shut-off system cuts power to heater. Position heater back in upright position and power is restored." Dr Infrared's DR-968: "The Dr. Infrared Heater is designed to cut off automatically when tipped in any direction," and "When returned to a normal upright position, the heater is ready for use again." No unplugging involved.
One warning about generic advice here: not every heater has a tip-over switch. The Lasko CD08200 manual documents a thermal overload protector and no tip-over switch anywhere in it; the CT32150 documents both protections. If a page tells you your heater has a tip-over switch, check your own manual before believing it — the protection you actually have decides which reset applies.
Why does my heater shut off after a few minutes?
Because something is restricting airflow through it, in nearly every case. Lasko's support portal names the cause directly for this exact symptom: "restricted airflow is usually the culprit of this occurring." The remedy Lasko gives is to clean the unit, reset it, and try a different outlet.
The restriction is usually dust rather than an object. Lasko's CT32150 manual asks owners to "Vacuum intake grills every two weeks; this will help to maintain the optimum heater performance," using "a vacuum equipped with a brush attachment." A ceramic heater pulls a large volume of room air through a fine grille, and a season's worth of dust in that grille raises the internal temperature until the cutoff does its job.
Placement is the other half. Lasko's manuals prohibit soft surfaces explicitly — "Do not place on soft surfaces, like a bed, where openings may become blocked" — and Vornado gives the same rule with the reason: "To prevent a possible fire, do not place the heater on soft surfaces, like a bed, where air intakes or exhaust can be blocked in any manner."
How much clearance does a space heater need?
Three feet from the front on every brand, but the sides and rear differ, and this is a place where a single rule of thumb misquotes the manufacturer. Lasko specifies combustible materials "at least 3 feet (0.9 m) from the front of the Heater" and "at least 1 foot (0.3 m) from the sides and rear." Vornado asks for "at least 3 feet away on all sides." CPSC's guidance matches Vornado: keep combustibles "at least 3 feet (0.9 m) from the front, sides, and rear of the heater."
Use the stricter of your manual and CPSC. The difference matters for shutdowns as well as for fire: a heater 6 inches from a wall on a Lasko-spec 1-foot rear clearance is within its manual but still recirculating its own hot air, which is exactly the condition the overheat cutoff exists to catch.
Does plugging a heater into a power strip make it shut off?
Every manufacturer and CPSC prohibit it, and an overloaded or heat-affected connection is a plausible route to nuisance shutoffs — but the reason to obey the rule is fire, not convenience. Lasko's CD08200 manual prints it in capitals: "NEVER USE WITH AN EXTENSION CORD. DO NOT PLUG HEATER INTO ANY OTHER CORD CONNECTED DEVICE, SUCH AS A POWER STRIP, SURGE PROTECTOR, MULTIPLE OUTLET ADAPTER, CORD REEL OR OUTLET-TYPE AIR FRESHENER. THE USE OF SUCH DEVICES MAY CREATE A FIRE HAZARD." Lasko adds: "DO NOT PLUG MULTIPLE DEVICES IN THE SAME OUTLET OR ON SAME CIRCUIT AS HEATER."
Vornado and Dr Infrared use nearly identical wording, and Vornado adds a restriction the others do not: "Do not use this heater on a surge-protected unit or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupted (GFCI) outlet." CPSC's Publication 098 is unambiguous — "Never power the heater with an extension cord or power strip" — along with two checks worth making tonight: "Be sure the heater plug fits tightly into the wall outlet. If not, do not use the outlet to power the heater," and "If the plug, outlet, or faceplate is hot, discontinue use of the heater."
CPSC's January 2025 release puts the scale on it: portable heaters caused roughly 1,600 fires a year between 2019 and 2021, with an average of 70 deaths and 160 injuries annually.
Check these first
- Does it restart by itself? Watch it for ten minutes without touching it.
- Restarts on its own → thermostat cycling. Raise the set point if you want longer runs. Nothing to fix.
- Stays off → a protection has tripped. Continue.
- Is it fully upright on a hard, level surface? Off carpet, off rugs, off beds. If it has a tip-over switch, righting it restores power immediately.
- Unplug it and wait. Lasko: 10 minutes. Vornado: 5 to 10. This is the only way to clear an overheat trip.
- While it is unplugged, vacuum the grilles. Brush attachment, intake and outlet, front and back. Lasko asks for this every two weeks in normal use.
- Check the clearance. 3 ft in front on every brand; 1 ft at the sides and rear on Lasko, 3 ft all round on Vornado and CPSC. Move furniture, curtains and bedding out of that zone.
- Move it to a wall outlet if it isn't in one. No strip, no extension cord, no adapter. Feel the plug and faceplate after ten minutes of running — CPSC says a hot plug or faceplate means stop using that outlet.
- Try a different outlet on a different circuit. Lasko's own troubleshooting step, and it separates a heater fault from a circuit fault.
- Restart and time it. If it now runs to temperature and cycles normally, it was airflow. If it trips again within minutes on a clean, clear, wall-plugged heater, stop and call the manufacturer.
The fan that keeps running is not a fault
Two manufacturers document a deliberate run-on after the heating element stops, and it gets reported as "my heater won't turn off." Dr Infrared's DR-968: "The blower fan will continue to run until the heat chambers cool down. After 90 seconds the fan will shut off automatically." Lasko's CT32150: "The fan will continue to run for 15 seconds after the heater element is turned off." Both are the machine clearing residual heat out of the element, which is exactly what prevents the overheat trip you were worried about.
Repair or replace?
Nothing here is a repair. Cleaning, moving and re-plugging are the whole toolkit, and Lasko's position on going further is explicit: "Please do not open the unit for any reason" — disassembly voids the warranty. A heater that trips its overheat cutoff repeatedly when clean, clear and wall-plugged has an internal fault, and on a unit costing well under a hundred dollars that means warranty replacement or a new heater, not a repair bill. Vornado's troubleshooting says the same in practice, routing repeated shutoffs to its consumer services line. When to stop using it
- The plug, outlet or faceplate is hot to the touch — CPSC says discontinue use of that outlet.
- The heater trips its overheat cutoff repeatedly when clean, clear and plugged directly into a wall outlet.
- Any burning smell beyond the first few minutes of the season, scorch marks, or a damaged cord or plug.
- The breaker trips when the heater starts.
- Within the warranty period, contact the manufacturer rather than opening the unit — Lasko's warranty is three years and requires a return authorization before anything is sent back.
