Lasko Heater Won't Turn On

How do you reset a Lasko heater?

By unplugging it, not by pressing anything. Lasko's support article on resetting gives the whole procedure: power the unit off and unplug it from the wall for 10 to 15 minutes, then plug it back in "in another room." The different-room step is deliberate — Lasko explains it as ruling out power fluctuations, recommending you test "a different outlet, as well as in a different room." When the heater goes back in, it must go "directly into a wall outlet. No extension cords or surge protectors."

The heater's own manuals give the same procedure for clearing a thermal overload trip, with a slightly shorter wait: the 5307, CD08200 and CT32150 all say to unplug the heater and wait 10 minutes for it to cool, then plug it in and operate it normally.

There is no user-accessible reset button anywhere in Lasko's documentation. The one button that carries the word RESET is the ALCI device on the CD08200's plug, and that is a ground-fault protector on a bathroom model, not a heater reset — details below. Lasko is equally clear about how far to go: "Please do not open the unit for any reason," which voids the warranty.

The three model-specific causes worth checking first

Each of these is documented by Lasko for a specific model, and each looks exactly like a dead heater to someone who does not know about it.

AR122 — a second power switch. Lasko's support article states: "ON the back of the unit, at the bottom of the heater, there is an Orange 'Inline Power Switch'," and "Be sure this is turned on before turning your heater power button on." The AR122 has a two-step power arrangement, and the front button does nothing while the rear switch is off.

Guardian series — a set point below the room. Lasko documents this as designed behavior, not a fault: "If a temperature below the room temperature is selected, the unit will not turn on." The fan may run while the heating element does not. Raise the target above the current room temperature and it starts.

CD08200 bathroom heater — the ALCI plug. This model carries a ground-fault device built into the plug. The manual describes its purpose: "This device provides protection against electric shock due to ground fault currents by automatically shutting off the power." To reset it: "Press the RESET button on the ALCI device to resume normal operation." Lasko also documents the monthly test — switch the heater on, press TEST at the plug, and the heater, fan and power light should all stop.

The CD08200 is the only Lasko model we could verify with an ALCI plug. If your heater is not a bathroom model, it almost certainly does not have one, and there is nothing at the plug to press.

What the power light tells you

On the CD08200, the power light is a genuine diagnostic and it separates two very different problems. The manual: "When the Heater is plugged in, the Power Light will come on indicating that there is power to the unit. The Power Light will remain lit until the Heater is unplugged from the electrical outlet."

So a lit power light with no heat means power is reaching the unit and the fault is downstream — a tripped thermal cutoff, or the heater circuit itself. No power light at all means nothing is getting in: check the ALCI plug, the outlet and the cord before anything else. The CD08200 also has a timer light, which shows steady above the "1 hour" marking when high heat is running on the one-hour timer.

Lasko does not publish a general indicator-light legend across its range, and on at least one model its own manual is wrong about its lights. Lasko's support portal states that on the CT22495, "the Instruction Manuals state that when pressing the '+ or -' the unit will go into Auto-Eco mode and the Auto-Eco mode icon will turn on… There is no indicator light, as the unit automatically goes into Auto-Eco model when the + or - button are pressed." Trust the support portal over the booklet on that model, and don't assume the same discrepancy on yours.

Why won't my Lasko heater turn on but the fan works?

Because the heating element and the fan are controlled separately, and two documented conditions stop the element while leaving the fan alone. On a Guardian, a set point below the room temperature does exactly this — Lasko states the unit "will not turn on" in heater mode under that condition. On any model, a thermal overload trip cuts the element while the control board still has power.

Both clear without tools. Raise the set point well above the room temperature and give it a minute; if that does nothing, run the 10-to-15-minute unplugged reset and try again in a different outlet.

Parts, numbers and what not to replace

Lasko publishes no user-replaceable internal parts for its heaters, and no Lasko document mentions a replaceable thermal fuse. Advice telling you to open the cabinet and replace one contradicts the manufacturer directly and voids a warranty that runs three years. We are not going to list a part number we cannot source, and neither should anyone else.

Repair or replace?

Lasko's warranty is the deciding factor and it is longer than most people assume. Lasko's support portal describes "a limited manufactures defect warranty" of three years, and the 5307 manual states the terms: "This warranty extends only to the original purchaser of the product and lasts for three (3) years from the date of original purchase," under which "Lasko will, at its sole option, repair or replace any part or parts that prove to be defective or replace the whole product with the same or comparable model."

Two practical points. The receipt is required — "It is important to hold onto your store purchase receipt in the event warranty replacement is needed." And there is a procedural trap worth knowing before you post anything: "Contact the Lasko customer service department to obtain a Return Authorization ("RA"). DO NOT return products without an RA or the warranty claim will not be processed."

Out of warranty, a heater that will not power on after a proper reset on a known-good outlet is a replacement. There is nothing serviceable in the cabinet, and running cost is a better thing to spend the decision on — 1,500 W for a winter is a visible number in the electricity cost calculator.
