Rheem Furnace Codes by Series
A Rheem furnace shows a fault as a two-digit number on its display or, on older RGRM, RGPR, RGRK and RGRA-family furnaces, as blinks of a green status LED. The same number can mean different things between series, so find your series first. Every meaning below is copied from Rheem's own installation manual, with document number and page.

How to find your series
The model number is on the furnace's rating plate. Rheem's manuals say so in one line: "See name/rating plate and clearance label for specific model number and clearance information." (92-24161-144-09, p. 8). They do not explain how to decode the model letters, so this page does not either. The current manuals print the brand letter as a placeholder, "(-)96V SERIES & (-)(-)96MDV SERIES", so match the letters and digits that follow it.
| Series as Rheem prints it | Manual (revision used here) | How it shows a fault | Section |

Ruud furnaces are made by the same company, but Rheem's documents don't list which Ruud models use these tables, so check your own furnace's installation manual.
How to read a Rheem code
On the display series a number is the code, and on the single-digit (-)801T and (-)801S/P display it arrives one digit at a time. Rheem's wording (92-24161-144-09, p. 39): "The method for displaying a two-digit fault is to display the first (most significant) digit for one second immediately followed by the second digit – which is also displayed for a duration of one second. A ½ second pause is then displayed. Cycle repeats until the fault is cleared. Each fault is flashed (displayed) a minimum of two times even if the fault condition has cleared before the fault can be displayed twice."
The same page explains the standby and mode letters: "During standby mode with no fault codes present, the display will read "0" (zero). During normal thermostat heating, cooling or continuous fan operation, a letter will be displayed to describe the mode of operation as follows: C = Cooling or Heat-Pump Heat Operation F = Continuous Fan Operation H = Gas Heating Operation". When two faults are present, the display alternates them with the top segment lit for ½ second between.
The communicating manuals add a warning worth reading before anything else (92-24161-124-12, p. 111): "NOTE: Verify display orientation is correct before interpreting fault codes. Otherwise, the fault codes may be upside-down. If a fault code or operating code is not on these lists, the display may be upside-down."
Lockouts and how they clear
Several codes are lockouts rather than faults in themselves: 10 on the display series, one blink on the LED series. Rheem's single-stage manual (92-24161-144-09, p. 40) says: "All lockout conditions can be cleared immediately provided that the original fault causing the lockout is cleared and power to the unit is cycled off and then back on again or (soft lockout only) if a heat call is cycled off for greater than 2 seconds but less than 20 seconds."
A one-hour lockout starts when "Flame has not been detected after four ignition trials", "Flame has been lost for five times in one heat call", "Undesired flame has been detected", "Dead Blower has been detected (main limit circuit open for more than 150 seconds)" or "When voltage has unexpectedly been detected on the gas valve circuit and voltage goes away when inducer is shut off." It "will automatically be reset after one hour". A hard lockout with code 93 "cannot be reset by cycling the heat call."
The older LED flowcharts give a power reset in a note (92-24161-49-10, p. 41): "NOTE: If IFC goes into lockout ("STATUS" LED will flash code "1"), shut off main power to unit, wait 30 seconds and then reset power." Clearing a lockout does not fix what caused it. A code that comes back is a call for a qualified servicer.
801T and 801S/P codes (80% single stage)
These 80% single-stage furnaces have one seven-segment digit and the shortest code list. The (-)801T manual 92-24161-144-09 and the (-)801S / (-)801P manual 92-24161-142-15 print the same table on p. 39, word for word, including the spelling "CONTINUOS".

92T and 95T codes (90%+ single stage)
The condensing single-stage furnaces use the same list plus two water-sensing codes, 58 and 59, and print 22 as "MAIN LIMIT OPEN". Manuals 92-24161-154-03 ((-)92T) and 92-24161-120-16 ((-)95T) carry the identical Table 17, "90P 1 STAGE FAULT CODE LIST", on p. 87.

Table 20 of each manual (pp. 88–94) gives every fault a description, cause and solution written for the installer; it is not reproduced here.
96T codes (two stage)
The two-stage (-)96T adds a lower-case h for low-stage heat and splits the pressure-switch faults into low and high switches (44 to 57). It is also the only table here with a fault priority column; the manual's text says that when two or more codes are present at the same time, priority decides how they are displayed (p. 88). This is Table 17, "90P 2 STAGE FAULT CODE LIST", of 92-24161-157-04, p. 88, including its spelling "INIDUCER".

802V, 96V, 97V and 98V codes (communicating)
The communicating furnaces share one longer list, with memory-card codes (d1, d4, d6), separate main limit and HALC codes (22, 23), an open fuse (30) and blower codes (60, 66, 68). Their tables name each code and give a status line saying whether the furnace keeps running. The modulating (-)97V and (-)98V add four codes: 65, 67, 71 and 77.
The table gives each code's displayed text and the first sentence or two of its STATUS line, verbatim, from the (-)96V manual 92-24161-124-12, Table 20, pp. 112–120. The full DESCRIPTION, EXPECTED OPERATION, CAUSE and SOLUTION columns are written for service personnel and are not reproduced. The last column shows where each code appears in the other three manuals.

Codes 65 and 67 on the modulating furnaces are non-critical, and gas heat carries on; in Rheem's words for both, "Gas heating will proceed as normal except firing rates between 50% and 65% will be fixed to 70% by the furnace control." (92-24161-126-04, p. 103.)
Each of these manuals also has a normal operation table (802V Table 12 p. 64; 96V Table 19 p. 111; 97V Table 18 p. 94; 98V Table 18 p. 91). None of these readings is a fault:
| Code | Name (verbatim) | Rheem's description, first sentence (verbatim) |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | STANDBY MODE | This code is displayed anytime there is no fault present and no thermostat call present. |
| H or h | GAS HEAT MODE | This code is displayed anytime there is a call for gas heat. |
| C or c | COOLING MODE | This code is displayed anytime there is a call for cooling. |
| HP or hP | HEAT-PUMP HEATING MODE | This code is displayed anytime there is a call for heat-pump heat. |
| F | CONTINUOUS FAN MODE | This code is displayed anytime there is a call for continuous fan from the thermostat. |
| dF | DEFROST MODE | This code indicates that the heat-pump is in defrost mode (dual-fuel systems only) and furnace is operating for defrost operation which is fixed at low-stage gas heating operation. |
| Cd or cd | COOLING IN DE-HUMIDIFICATION MODE | This code indicates that there is a both cooling and de-humidification demand present at the same time. |
On these furnaces the lower-case letter is the low stage; for gas heat Rheem says "The lower-case "h" is displayed when the thermostat is requesting low gas heat and the upper-case "H" is displayed when the thermostat is requesting high-stage gas heat."
RGRM and RGTM LED codes
These two-stage condensing furnaces have four LEDs, labelled flame, status, power and CFM, and the manual explains each in a short legend. "There are four diagnostic LED's on the furnace control. These are labeled flame, status, power and CFM." (92-24161-84-11, p. 55). The legend below is p. 56.
| LED and signal | Rheem's description (verbatim) | Page |
|---|---|---|
| FLAME LED: OFF | No flame is detected. | 56 |
| FLAME LED: Rapid Blink | Unexpected Flame | 56 |
| FLAME LED: Slow Blink | Marginal Flame Sense | 56 |
| FLAME LED: Steady ON | Normal Flame Detected | 56 |
| STATUS LED: Steady ON | Normal Fault detected. | 56 |
| STATUS LED: 1 Blink | Ignition failure – 1 HR lockout | 56 |
| STATUS LED: 2 Blinks | Pressure switch stuck open – switch will not close when inducer is on. | 56 |
| STATUS LED: 3 Blinks | Limit switch open – main limit or roll-out control. | 56 |
| STATUS LED: 4 Blinks | Pressure switch stuck closed. Switch will not open. | 56 |
| STATUS LED: 5 Blinks | Not applicable. | 56 |
| STATUS LED: 6 Blinks | Line and Neutral reversed. | 56 |
| POWER LED: OFF | No power (24VAC) to control board. | 56 |
| POWER LED: ON | Control is powered. | 56 |
| CFM LED | One Blink represents 100 CFM of target airflow. A half blink represents approx. 50 CFM. | 56 |
The manual adds that the CFM LED "is intended to be for reference only." "Normal Fault detected." is how the manual prints the steady status light.
RGPR, RGLR and RGRK, RGRL, RGTK blink codes
These two-stage furnaces print their blink codes in a box on the troubleshooting flowchart, and the two manuals print the same box word for word: 92-24161-49-10 (RGPR / RGLR) Figure 33 on p. 41, and 92-24161-36-26 (RGRK-12ERAJS / RGRL / RGTK) Figure 53 on p. 60. The "Go to point" references are to letters on that flowchart, which is written for a trained service technician.
| LED and signal | Rheem's description (verbatim) | Pages |
|---|---|---|
| STATUS (Green) LED: 1 Blink | Soft lockout Reset System power and start over from beginning | 41 / 60 |

RGRA family blink codes
The RGRA, RGRB, RGTA, RGRS, RGTS and RGRT furnaces share one manual, 92-24161-16-20, whose Figure 54 on p. 56 is titled for "MODELS W/INTEGRATED FURNACE CONTROL (IFC) UT Electronic Controls 1012-925 (115 VAC IGNITER)". Its list stops at five blinks and marks the twinning code optional.
| LED and signal | Rheem's description (verbatim) | Page |
|---|---|---|
| BLINK CODES (GREEN LED): 1 Blink | Soft lockout Reset System power and start over from beginning | 56 |
| BLINK CODES (GREEN LED): 2 Blinks | PS Circuit open go to point "F." | 56 |

What an owner can do, and what Rheem leaves to a servicer
Rheem's manuals are written for installers, and the maintenance chapter opens by saying so: "THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE INTENDED AS AN AID TO QUALIFIED SERVICE PERSONNEL FOR PROPER INSTALLATION, ADJUSTMENT AND OPERATION OF THIS UNIT." What they ask the installer to tell the homeowner is short:
| Task | Rheem's wording (verbatim) | Who |
|---|---|---|

Unlike Goodman's manuals, Rheem's do not leave the burner-flame check to the owner: it is assigned to a qualified installer, service agency or the gas supplier. Everything a fault code's solution column describes, from pressure switches to flame sensors, is servicer work.
Rheem's gas and carbon monoxide wording
Every manual cited here prints the gas-smell instruction on its cover (p. 1), and the covers of the (-)801T, (-)801S/P, (-)92T, (-)95T, (-)96T, (-)802V, (-)96V and (-)98V manuals add a carbon monoxide warning box. The furnace pages on this site carry the general guidance above; this is Rheem's own wording.
| Rheem's wording (verbatim) | Source |
|---|---|
| "WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS • Do not try to light any appliance. • Do not touch any electrical switch; do not use any phone in your building. • Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor's phone. Follow the gas supplier's instructions. • If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire department. • Do not return to your home until authorized by the gas supplier or fire department." | 92-24161-124-12, p. 1 (the same instruction is on the cover of all thirteen manuals) |
| "DO NOT RELY ON SMELL ALONE TO DETECT LEAKS. DUE TO VARIOUS FACTORS, YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO SMELL FUEL GASES." | 92-24161-124-12, p. 1 |
| "U.L. and/or C.S.A. recognized fuel gas and CO (carbon monoxide) detectors are recommended in all applications, and their installation should be in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations and/or local laws, rules, regulations, or customs." | 92-24161-124-12, p. 1 (92-24161-84-11 p. 1 reads "U.L. recognized fuel gas and CO (carbon monoxide) detectors…") |
| "CARBON-MONOXIDE POISONING HAZARD FAILURE TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS COULD RESULT IN SEVERE PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH DUE TO CARBON-MONOXIDE POISONING, IF COMBUSTION PRODUCTS INFILTRATE INTO THE BUILDING." | 92-24161-124-12, p. 1 |
| "CHECK THAT FURNACE VENT (AND AIR INTAKE) TERMINAL(S) ARE NOT OBSTRUCTED IN ANY WAY DURING ALL SEASONS." | 92-24161-124-12, p. 1 |
| "Improper installation, adjustment, alteration, service or maintenance can cause injury property damage or death. Refer to this manual. Installation and service must be performed by a qualified installer, service agency or the gas supplier." | 92-24161-124-12, p. 1 |
| "HOLES IN THE VENT PIPE OR HEAT EXCHANGER CAN CAUSE TOXIC FUMES TO ENTER THE HOME, RESULTING IN CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING OR DEATH. THE VENT PIPE OR HEAT EXCHANGER MUST BE REPLACED IF THEY LEAK." | 92-24161-144-09, p. 49 |
Rheem furnaces not covered yet
Two older modulating families have a Rheem installation manual on the same document server, but their fault tables are not on this page yet: RGFE / RGGE / RGJF (92-24161-75-04) and GFD / GGD / GJD (92-24161-22-21). Their tables run to many pages, and the GFD table's text cannot be read reliably from the file, so they wait rather than risk a wrong transcription.
For Rheem's newest furnaces, the R921, R951, R962, R972 and R97M/R98M models, we did not find an installation manual on a Rheem-hosted page, so this page has no code table for them.
For other brands' schemes, see the Goodman furnace codes hub and the Carrier furnace codes hub.
Frequently asked questions
What does code 57 mean on a Rheem furnace?
It is a pressure switch fault, but the wording depends on the series. On the (-)801T, (-)801S/P, (-)92T and (-)95T it is "PRESS SWITCH STUCK OPEN WHEN SHOULD BE CLOSED"; on the (-)96T, "HIGH PRESSURE SWITCH OPEN"; on the communicating furnaces, "HIGH PRESSURE SWITCH OPEN, INDUCER ON HIGH SPEED". Rheem leaves pressure switches, hoses and venting to a servicer.
Why does my Rheem furnace show 0, H or C?
Those are not faults. Rheem's manuals say the display reads "0" (zero) in standby and shows a letter for the mode: C for cooling or heat-pump heat, F for continuous fan, H for gas heat. Two-stage and communicating furnaces also use a lower-case h or c for low stage.
How do I read a two-digit code on a single-digit display?
The (-)801T and (-)801S/P show the first digit for one second, then the second digit for one second, then pause for half a second and repeat. Code 57 therefore appears as 5, then 7. Each fault is shown at least twice.
My Rheem furnace code is not in any table. What now?
Check that you are reading the display the right way up. Rheem's communicating manuals warn that "the fault codes may be upside-down" and that "If a fault code or operating code is not on these lists, the display may be upside-down." Then confirm the series on the rating plate.
How do I reset a Rheem furnace lockout?
Rheem's single-stage manual says lockouts clear when "the original fault causing the lockout is cleared and power to the unit is cycled off and then back on again"; a one-hour lockout also resets itself after an hour. The older LED flowcharts say to shut off main power, wait 30 seconds and reset. A code that returns needs a servicer.
