Manual Transfer Switch for a Generator: Find the Right Type
Match the switch to the generator's outlet first, then decide how much of the house it feeds. A portable with a 30 A L14-30 outlet is served by the documented 30 A products — Generac HomeLink 6852, 6853 and 6854, the one-or-two-circuit Generac 6377, or Reliance Controls 306CRK and 310CRK. A 50 A connection is what Generac's HomeLink 9854 and 9855 and its 200 A-utility / 50 A-generator whole-house switch are built for. The finder below narrows that published list by outlet, circuit count and whether the box arrives with an inlet and cord. It reports manufacturer specifications; it does not decide that a given switch suits your service, and it is not a substitute for the electrician who makes the final selection.

Which generator outlet do you have?
Read the receptacle on the generator's control panel before anything else, because the transfer-switch input has to match the connection the manufacturer names. Generac documents HomeLink 6852, 6853 and 6854 as its 30 A models and 9854 and 9855 as the 50 A versions; the 6377 is a 30 A single-load switch for portables from 5 kW with a 30 A receptacle.
The 30 A connection is the four-prong twist-lock marked L14-30, and 30 A at 250 V is 7,500 W. The 50 A connection is the flat 14-50 or the CS6365 twist-lock, and 50 A at 250 V is 12,500 W. If the generator does not carry the outlet the switch manufacturer names, stop there rather than adapting the recommendation by guesswork — an adapter that bridges the two is not a documented arrangement.
How many circuits do you actually want on generator power?
The circuit count is the second decision, and the manufacturers publish it per model rather than leaving it to interpretation. Two circuits, six, eight to ten, up to sixteen, or the whole load center with the homeowner shedding loads by hand: each of those is a different documented product class, and the table below maps them to the models this database holds.

Does a whole-house switch mean a whole-house generator?
No, and the distinction costs people money. Generac describes its whole-house manual switches as feeding the entire load center while the homeowner turns off selected loads so the running total stays inside the generator's capacity. The 200 A figure describes the utility main the transfer equipment is built around, not what a portable can deliver.

Switch only, or a kit with the inlet box and cord?
Both arrangements exist inside the same product families, so the model number decides it rather than the family name. Reliance publishes 306CRK and 310CRK as complete kits: the transfer switch, the PB30 outdoor power inlet box and a 10-foot PC3010 cord. Generac sells HomeLink as switch-only configurations and as kits with an inlet box and cord.
The finder's third control filters on that, and each result card states the inlet-box and cord status from the manufacturer's own listing. One practical note that the spec sheets do not make for you: CPSC puts generators at least 20 feet from the house, so the 10-foot cord in a kit will not reach a compliant position and a longer cord is a separate purchase.
Manual transfer switch or interlock kit?
They solve the same problem in different places. A manual transfer switch is a listed enclosure beside the panel that moves selected circuits, or a defined load arrangement, between utility and generator power. An interlock instead bolts to your existing panel and makes it mechanically impossible for the utility main and a back-fed generator breaker to be on together.

- Selecting the final switch for a specific service — Generac's own documentation sends manual transfer-switch installation to a qualified or authorized electrician.
- Any work on the panel, the inlet box or the generator's output wiring, which in most jurisdictions also needs a permit and an inspection.

Does a 30 A transfer switch limit my generator to 7,500 watts?
The 30 A connection itself does: 30 A at 250 V is 7,500 W, and Reliance rates its 30 A kits for generators up to 7,500 running watts. A larger portable can still be used, but only what the 30 A cord and inlet can carry passes through, so a 9,500 W or 12,000 W unit is normally paired with 50 A hardware instead.
What is the difference between the Generac HomeLink 6852, 6853 and 6854?
All three are 30 A HomeLink switches. Generac's specification lists 6852 with 8 circuits provided and no inlet box or cord, while 6853 and 6854 arrive as kits with 10 circuits, a power inlet box and a cord — 6854 with the aluminum box. Check the model number rather than assuming every version of the family ships with the same accessories.
Can I use a manual transfer switch with any portable generator?
Only where the generator has the outlet the switch manufacturer names, and the capacity the listing assumes. Generac's 6377 is documented for portables from 5 kW with a 30 A receptacle; its 50 A whole-house switch assumes a portable from 8 kW with a 50 A receptacle. Outside those published conditions there is no manufacturer statement to rely on.
Do I still need a power inlet box if the switch is pre-wired?
Yes. The pre-wiring is between the transfer switch and the panel; the generator still connects through a flanged inlet on an outside wall. Some models include one, some do not, and the finder shows which. The direct-cord arrangement on Generac's whole-house and single-load switches is the manufacturer's own published configuration, not an inlet box.
Is a manual transfer switch something I can install myself?
No. It sits on the line side of the panel and the installation means opening a live service. Generac and Reliance both specify a qualified electrician, and most jurisdictions require a permit and an inspection on top of that. Choosing the equipment is the part you can do yourself, which is what this page is for.
