Code 36 is an engine stopped fault: "engine stopped without command by controller." The controller did not shut the generator down — the engine quit on its own and the controller noticed. It is a second-level code, so you only see it after asking for it: following a fault shutdown the status light in the control switch blinks three times at a time, and pressing Stop once makes it blink the two-digit code. Three blinks, a pause, then six blinks is code 36. Cummins publishes six corrective actions for it, and unusually for a generator fault code, all six are owner-level: check and fill the fuel tank on gasoline models, check and fill the LPG container on LP models, make sure the spark plug lead is secured, replace the spark plug, service the air cleaner, and check for mechanical damage. First: is this your generator?

Cummins says it plainly in the manual's nameplate section: "Each character, including the last letter in the model number, is important for obtaining the right parts." The same is true of fault codes. The QG 4000 name has covered more than one spec generation, and the manuals are written per spec range, not per marketing name.

Cummins Onan's own QG 4000 spec sheet lists models such as 4KYFA26100, 4KYFR65697, 4KYFR11429 and 3.6KYFA26120 — those are KYF spec models, a different range from the KYD models 981-0169 documents. If your nameplate says KYF, or KY with some other letter, get the operator manual for that range from the Cummins RV generator manuals index and read its own fault table. Code numbering is broadly stable across the Onan RV range, but this page does not assert that, and it does not generalize code 36 to Onan diesel sets, Commercial Mobile sets, or any other family.

Reading the code correctly

  1. Watch what the status indicator light does after the shutdown. It repeats either three blinks at a time or four blinks at a time.
  2. Four blinks is not a code you look up. It means cranking exceeded 15 to 20 seconds without the engine starting — an overcrank, first-level fault code 4.
  3. Three blinks means a service fault with a second-level code behind it. Press Stop once and the light blinks the two-digit code. Press Stop again to stop the blinking.
  4. Count it as tens then units. The first group of blinks is the tens digit, the second group after the brief pause is the units digit. Code 36 is three blinks, pause, six blinks — the manual uses code 36 as its own worked example.
  5. Do not read first-level codes as two-digit codes. Cummins warns specifically that fault code 3 and fault code 4 are first-level faults and must not be interpreted as 33 or 44, which are not assigned as fault codes at all.
  6. If the blinking has stopped, bring it back. The code stops blinking after five minutes; press Stop three times within five seconds to restore it. Note that the last fault logged keeps blinking even after the condition that caused the shutdown has been corrected — so a code on the panel is not proof the fault is still present.

What Cummins says to check for code 36

These are the six corrective actions from Table 1 of the operator manual, in the manual's order. The manual precedes the whole table with a warning that only trained and experienced service personnel with knowledge of fuels, electricity and machinery hazards should perform genset service, and with a burn warning about hot engine parts — so let the set cool, and stop at the point where the manual stops telling owners what to do.

  1. Gasoline models — check and fill the fuel tank. Cummins adds the detail that matters here: the genset fuel pickup tube is probably higher up in the fuel tank than the vehicle engine's pickup. The generator runs out of fuel while the gauge still shows something. Elsewhere in the manual Cummins suggests marking the genset empty point on the fuel gauge for exactly this reason.
  2. LPG models — check and fill the LPG container. On cold days the container may have to be kept at least half full so the vaporization rate keeps up with the genset's fuel demand. A half-empty tank on a cold morning behaves like an empty one.
  3. Secure the spark plug lead on the spark plug. A lead that has worked loose gives exactly this symptom: the engine starts on the starter and then quits.
  4. Replace the spark plug. The set has one. Thread it in by hand until it seats to avoid cross-threading, then torque to 13 lb-ft (17 N·m) — or, without a torque wrench, a further quarter turn if it is being reused, three-eighths to a half turn if it is new. Cummins also notes that a plug which fouls frequently or carries heavy soot deposits indicates the need for engine service, so a plug that looks bad is itself a finding.
  5. Service the air cleaner. Remove the air filter housing cover and the filter element cover plate — separate wing nuts — and fit a new element centred over the carburetor air inlet. Do not overtighten the wing nuts: the manual warns that this distorts the element and causes air leaks around it.
  6. Check for mechanical damage. The last item on the list, and the one that ends the owner's part of the job.

Two of the six corrective actions for code 36 are about fuel and two more are about the plug and the air cleaner, so it is worth having the specifications in front of you before topping anything up or fitting a part. All of these come from the same operator manual as the fault table.

Repair or replace?

Nothing about code 36 argues for replacing a generator. A spark plug and an air filter element are the cheapest parts on the machine, and the first two checks on Cummins' list cost nothing at all. What code 36 does argue for is not ignoring it: a set that stops on its own under load, gets refuelled, and stops again is not a fuel problem, and the manual's own note about a frequently fouling plug is a hint that the engine wants attention rather than another plug.

When to call a dealer

  • Code 36 returns after fuel, plug lead, plug and air cleaner have all been dealt with.
  • You find mechanical damage at step 6, or anything that looks like a fuel leak.
  • The nameplate says a spec range other than KYD A–C and you do not have that manual.
