Generac Standby Generator Won't Start (or Didn't Start in an Outage)
Most Generacs that "won't start" are either not in AUTO, holding an uncleared alarm, or sitting on a dead battery. Generac's outage article checks in this order: the unit is in AUTO and the panel or Mobile Link shows no alarm; the display and LEDs are alive (if dead: battery connections and voltage); battery health — above 12.6 V is charged, consistently under 12 V means replace; the T1 charger feed and its fuse; a hard reset; then confirm the utility is actually out. If the engine cranks but won't catch, that's a fuel or ignition problem, not a battery problem — see the owner's-manual table below. To get power now, press OFF, set the generator's main breaker OFF, press MANUAL; if it runs, the problem is in the automatic side and a dealer can find it later. Never run it with the house connected by any route other than the transfer switch.

The controller lid tells you which half of the problem you're in. Display alive, LED red: it's an alarm, and the code is the diagnosis — 1100 Overcrank means it cranked and never started; 2800 means a shutdown switch is open; a 1500-series code means it lost the speed signal. Display dark: it's DC power — battery, cables, or the 7.5 A fuse — and no code will post until that's fixed. Display alive, green LED, nothing happens when the lights go out: the utility isn't really out (a tripped house main looks like an outage from inside), or the transfer circuit isn't telling the generator to start.
Check these first (five minutes)
- Lift the lid and look. Green LED and "Ready to Run" — the unit thinks the grid is up. Check your own main breaker and ask a neighbor before going further. Red LED — read the code and go to its page. Yellow — a warning or maintenance reminder; the unit should still start, so keep going.
- Press MANUAL. With the unit OFF and the generator's main breaker (MLCB) OFF, press the blue MANUAL button. Generac's starting-issues article lists trying MANUAL as a step; the logic is that if it starts in MANUAL, the engine, fuel and battery are working and what's left is the automatic-start or transfer side. If it doesn't, listen: cranking with no start is fuel or ignition; a click or nothing is battery.
- Battery voltage. Controller menu — Evolution 2.0: ESC → DATE/TIME → ENTER → MAINT → ENTER → Battery; Evolution 1.0: ESC → BAT → ENTER — or a meter across the posts. Generac's voltage-test article: 12.6 V and above charged; 12.4–12.6 partially charged; under 12.4 discharged; consistently under 12 V, replace. Terminals clean and tight; cables not corroded through under the insulation.
- The 7.5 A fuse. Under the rubber cover on the control panel. Pull it and look; a blown one leaves the display dark even with a good battery. Generac's 2400 article says replacements are available at hardware and auto-parts stores. If a new one blows immediately, stop — there's a short, and that's a dealer.
- Is the charger working? With utility on, no 2780 on the display, and the BATTERY menu reading "Good" or above 12.6 V. A 2780 Charger Missing AC with the grid up means the battery has been discharging for as long as the warning has been there.
- Fuel. Valve at the generator open; propane above 30 %; on natural gas, other gas appliances in the house working. If the unit was just converted or installed, the fuel selection in the controller must match the fuel — Generac's undervoltage and underspeed articles both put this on the owner's list, but changing it is the installer's job.
- Hard reset. Generac's procedure: OFF → remove the 7.5 A fuse → remove the side panel → disconnect black (−) then red (+) → turn the utility service disconnect off → reconnect red (+) first, black (−) second → fuse back → service disconnect on. Evolution units then show the Install Wizard (time and date). Generac's own caveat: "error codes usually do not require a hard reset to clear" — it's the step for a controller that's frozen, not for a bad battery.
- Still nothing? Generac's article ends at the dealer locator. Before the call, note: what the display shows, whether MANUAL works, battery voltage, and the status history in Mobile Link. That's a diagnosis half done.
Cranks but won't start
The owner's manual's troubleshooting table is short and worth quoting for this case. Engine will not crank: blown fuse, loose or corroded or faulty battery cables, faulty starter contact, faulty starter motor, discharged battery — replace the 7.5 A fuse, tighten or clean or replace cables, contact a dealer for the starter, charge or replace the battery. Engine cranks but will not start: no fuel, faulty fuel solenoid, harness or wiring issue, faulty spark plugs, valve clearance — replenish fuel or open the valve, dealer for the solenoid and harness, inspect and replace plugs, inspect and adjust valve clearance.
Plugs are an owner job: unit OFF, MLCB OFF, 7.5 A fuse out, battery negative disconnected, then the two 0G0767A plugs on 14–26 kW engines (one on single-cylinder units). Valve clearance is a feeler-gauge job that Generac assigns to the break-in service and Schedule B; on 14 and 18 kW Guardians and Next Generation units with hydraulic lifters it doesn't exist. A unit that has crossed 400 hours without a valve adjustment and now cranks without catching is the classic case.
Five failed starts post 1100 Overcrank. Don't clear it and crank again more than once — every cycle is more starter wear on a discharging battery.
Didn't exercise, then didn't start
A generator that has quietly skipped its weekly exercise for a month usually announces a no-start in advance. Generac's not-exercising article checks: unit in AUTO with the MLCB ON; LED green; date and time set correctly (24-hour format); exercise day, time and frequency set; any alarm cleared; and the run log in Mobile Link. If all of that is right and the log shows no exercise, that's a dealer call before the next storm, not after.
Getting power now: manual start and manual transfer
Generac's manual-mode article: press OFF once, set the generator's MLCB OFF, press MANUAL once. The unit starts. When you're done: OFF, then AUTO, then MLCB ON. Manual mode does not transfer the house unless the utility is already down.
If the engine runs in MANUAL but the transfer switch doesn't move, the owner's manual describes manual transfer: verify the unit is OFF, generator MLCB OFF, turn off the utility supply to the transfer switch, move the contacts to STANDBY with the manual handle inside the switch, press MANUAL, warm up a few minutes, MLCB ON. Reverse the sequence to return to utility, running one minute with no load first. The 2017 manual adds the line that matters: "Do not manually transfer under load. Disconnect transfer switch from all power sources prior to manual transfer." If you're not comfortable inside a live switch cabinet, this is where you stop and call.
Under no circumstances feed the house from a generator through a dryer outlet or any cord into a receptacle. Generac's own backfeed page says it violates the NEC, is illegal in many areas, and can kill line workers; the interlock and transfer switch guide covers the legal ways.
Repair or replace?
A battery is the usual fix and the cheapest. Fuse, plugs, terminal cleaning — trivial. A starter motor or fuel solenoid is a part plus a service call and still nowhere near replacement territory. The unit that argues for replacement is a Nexus-era or older machine with a failed controller, where the board is expensive and the rest of the generator is approaching the age where the alternator and engine follow — an honest dealer will price the board against a new unit and let you choose.
When to call a dealer
- Cranks strongly but never fires, with fuel confirmed and new plugs — solenoid, harness, valves.
- No crank with a charged battery and a good fuse — starter or starter contact.
- A new 7.5 A fuse blows immediately — short in the DC circuit.
- 2780 with utility on and the MLCB confirmed ON — T1 fuse in the transfer switch.
- Runs in MANUAL but not in AUTO, and the utility is confirmed out — transfer circuit (194/23) or controller.
