Generac Code 2800: Shutdown Switch Off and How to Clear It
Code 2800 means an emergency shutdown switch is in the OFF position. Generac's support article: the alarm "indicates that one or both auxiliary shutdown switches are in the OFF position," also known as the open position. These are emergency-stop devices Generac has fitted since 2017 under fire-code requirements, and the first question is not how to reset but why it was opened — a service visit, a gas smell, a fire department, a neighbor. If you know it was a mistake, set every switch back to I and clear the alarm at the panel. If the code returns with every switch closed, Generac says "there may be a wire-connection issue," and that is a dealer visit.

How to clear Generac code 2800
2800 is one of the alarms Generac says an owner can resolve, but only after every emergency shutdown switch is back at I (closed); with any switch open, it will not clear. Find out why the switch was opened first. Then clear it at the panel, and if 2800 will not clear or keeps returning, call a dealer. First, find out why it was opened
An emergency shutdown switch is opened on purpose more often than by accident, and closing it without knowing why it was opened is the one way to make this code dangerous. If a technician left it open, they may have a reason; if it was opened because of a gas smell, a fire, or a flood, the unit should not be restarted until that is resolved. The owner's manual's own warning about the switch is that it "is not to be used to power down the unit under normal operating circumstances. Doing so will result in equipment damage" — which is also a reason to ask who used it and why. Only once you know the answer is a mistake, or a routine service visit, does the reset below apply.
Generac adds a note of its own: "Some generator service providers may intentionally trip these switches to prevent generators that are awaiting service from running." If that may be the case, ask them before you close it.
What has to be true before it clears
Every switch has to be closed. The 2020 Guardian manual states the condition and the clear in one note (A0000973303 Rev. A, p. 17): "Generator will not start if either switch is OPEN (O). Controller displays an 'Auxiliary Shutdown' alarm, and red LED 'Alarm' light illuminates. To clear this condition, set switch or switches to CLOSED (I)." Generac's 2800 article puts it the same way for two-cylinder Guardians, which have a second, internal switch: "To clear the alarm, both switches must be in the I (ON) position." The 2023 manual's Quick Reference Guide (A0001846499 Rev. C, p. 35) lists SHUTDOWN SWITCH with a flashing red LED and the solution "Set emergency shutdown switch(es) to CLOSED (I). Clear alarm."
On a Next Generation unit, the manual (A0004332577 Rev. C, p. 21) says the generator "will not start if generator emergency shutdown switch is active" and that Mobile Link shows "Generator has been stopped via generator emergency shutdown switch." Its Quick Reference Guide (p. 38) separates the two numbers: SHUTDOWN SWITCH (2800), "Generator emergency shutdown on unit activated"; SHUTDOWN SWITCH (2801), "Remote generator emergency shutdown activated," whose solution begins "Set generator emergency shutdown switch to CLOSED (I)." If a secondary switch was installed near the transfer switch, Generac's article says to "locate it and confirm it is also in the I or Closed position."
If 2800 won't clear, or comes back
Generac's article: "If the 2800 code fails to clear after resetting the switch or frequently returns without someone pressing it, there may be a wire-connection issue. If issues persist after performing the checks and attempting to restart, it is strongly recommended that you contact a Generac Independent Authorized Dealer for diagnosis." And under "Still seeing the 2800 error?": "If this error code persists, a service visit from your local dealer may be required."
What code 2800 means
The switch exists so a standby generator can be stopped from outside the enclosure without opening it. Generac's support article describes the switches as emergency-stop mechanisms required by NFPA fire-safety regulations since 2017, and the owner's manual states their purpose plainly: "This auxiliary shutdown switch shuts down generator and disables restarts."
What the display calls it depends on the manual year: the 2020 manual (A0000973303) shows AUXILIARY SHUTDOWN with a red LED; the 2023 manual (A0001846499) renames the device the emergency shutdown switch and the alarm row reads SHUTDOWN SWITCH with a flashing red LED. Mobile Link reports "STOPPED – ALARM / ERROR CODE 2800" with the message "The generator has been stopped via emergency shutdown. Please reset the shutdown switch or contact a dealer."

Where the switches are, by model
Generac's support article gives the locations, and they differ by line — which is why "flip the switch on the back" is incomplete advice for a two-cylinder Guardian.
Guardian series. Single-cylinder models have one switch, on the back of the generator. Two-cylinder models have that external switch plus a second, internal one on the firewall panel inside the housing. Generac describes them as small, black, rubber-coated toggles marked I (closed, ON) and O (open, OFF).
Next Generation series. The owner's manual (A0004332577 Rev. C, p. 20) places the generator emergency shutdown switch "on the exterior of the generator side panel." Generac's article says these units "will usually only have one shutdown switch, unless local code requires a secondary emergency shut off switch (G0073620) installed near the transfer switch. The secondary switch will give a code of 2801."
Checking each shutdown switch
- Find out why it was opened. A service visit, a gas smell, a flood, a neighbor — if the reason is not a mistake, stop here and resolve that first.
- External switch. On the back of a Guardian; on the exterior of the side panel on a Next Generation unit. Generac describes the Guardian switches as "small, black, rubber-coated switches"; set it firmly to I.
- Internal switch, two-cylinder Guardians. Lift the lid; the second switch is on the firewall. Set it to I.
- Secondary switch, Next Generation. If one was installed near the transfer switch, check it too — an open one reports as 2801.
- Clear the alarm with the sequence for your controller, from the lights and alarms page. The red LED should go out.
- Comes right back with every switch at I? The switch circuit is open somewhere other than the switch positions. That is a dealer diagnosis — the harness runs inside the enclosure and Generac's owner documentation gives no owner procedure for it.
- Comes back on its own, days later? Generac's article says to contact a dealer if the alarm returns repeatedly without anyone touching the switch.
The secondary shutdown switch part number
Generac publishes no owner-facing part number for the switch fitted to the generator, and this site does not list numbers that appear only on reseller sites. The one number Generac does publish is the optional secondary switch for Next Generation installations: G0073620, listed in its accessories article as "Remote Shut Down Switch" and in the 2800 article as the "secondary emergency shut off switch (G0073620)". If the switch itself is damaged — a missing boot, a cracked body, water inside — the replacement is a dealer part matched to your serial number, and the harness it connects to is inside the enclosure.
When an open-switch alarm needs a dealer
- Every switch is at I and 2800 returns immediately after the reset.
- The switch or its boot is physically damaged.
- The alarm shows up repeatedly with no one near the unit.
- 2800 appears together with any other alarm in the log — clear this one first, then work the other.
- You do not know why the switch was opened and cannot find out.

Codes and symptoms mistaken for 2800
