Code 2800 means an emergency shutdown switch is open. Generac's support article says 2800 (and 2801) indicate "one or both of the auxiliary shutdown switches is in the OFF position." Every air-cooled Guardian built since 2017 has a switch on the outside of the back panel; 14 kW and larger units (13 kW on older twin-cylinder models) have a second one inside on the firewall. Somebody — a technician, a landscaper, a kid, or a raccoon — moved one to O. Flip it (them) to I, press OFF, then ENTER, then AUTO. Done. If the code returns with both switches closed, the circuit itself is open somewhere and that's a dealer visit.

What code 2800 means

The switch exists because fire code wants a way to kill a standby generator from outside the enclosure without opening it. Generac describes the switches as safety devices required since 2017 (NFPA-driven), and the owner's manual is blunt about their purpose: "This auxiliary shutdown switch shuts down generator and disables restarts."

The Evolution diagnostic manual's entry: "Aux Shutdown — 2800 — External shut down circuit is open. Check the continuity of the harness and operation of the switch(es). Repair/replace as needed." The controller reads the switch loop as a digital input (position 1, "Auxiliary Shutdown"); an open loop = alarm.

What you see depends on the manual year:

  • 2020 manual (A0000973303): display says AUXILIARY SHUTDOWN, red LED.
  • 2023 manual (A0001846499): Generac renamed it the emergency shutdown switch; the alarm row reads SHUTDOWN SWITCH with a flashing red LED.

The diagnostic manual also lists an Emergency Stop alarm message that is distinct from Auxiliary Shutdown; on air-cooled units the one you'll actually meet is 2800.

Reset procedure (as the manual states it)

Guardian series (Evolution 2.0 / Sync)

  1. Find the external switch on the back panel of the generator — a small switch under a rubber boot. Set it to I (closed).
  2. If your unit is 14 kW or larger (13 kW on older twin-cylinder models), open the enclosure and find the second switch on the firewall (the metal wall between the engine and the alternator side). Set it to I.
  3. On the control panel press OFF, then ENTER.
  4. Press AUTO.

Next Generation series (Power Zone 200)

  1. Verify any secondary switch is closed.
  2. Hold OFF for three seconds to clear.
  3. Press AUTO.

The owner's manual adds a warning worth repeating: "The auxiliary shutdown switch is not to be used to power down the unit under normal operating circumstances. Doing so will result in equipment damage." Use OFF on the panel to stop the unit; the red switch is for emergencies.

Step-by-step diagnosis

  1. External switch. Back panel, under the rubber boot. Set it firmly to I; the boot can hide a switch sitting halfway.
    • Was it at O? → close it, reset, done. Think about who touched it: the last service visit, a lawn crew, or a curious neighbor.
  2. Internal switch (14 kW and up). Lift the enclosure lid. The second switch is on the firewall. Same drill.
    • At O? → close, reset. Techs sometimes leave this one open on purpose during service and forget it.
  3. Reset and watch. OFF → ENTER → AUTO. The red LED should go out and the display return to READY / the normal status screen.
  4. Comes right back? With both switches at I, the loop is still open. Look at the boot and the switch body for damage — rodents chew this harness because it runs low along the enclosure. Also check that the internal switch's connector is seated; it's a spade or plug connection that vibration can walk loose.
    • Visible damage → the switch is an inexpensive part (Generac 10000016218 per aftermarket listings; confirm with a dealer), but the harness repair and the warranty question belong to the dealer.
  5. Comes back days later, on its own? A switch that flips itself doesn't exist; an intermittent open in the loop does. Generac's article says to contact a dealer if the alarm returns frequently without anyone touching the switch.

That's the only part involved. No official Generac page lists the number, so confirm with a dealer before ordering; the switch is a low-cost item and the wrong style won't seat in the boot.

Repair or replace?

There is no scenario where 2800 by itself justifies replacing a generator. It's a switch, a boot, and a two-wire loop. Worst case is a dealer trip to trace a chewed harness — an hour or two.

When to call a dealer

  • Both switches are at I and 2800 returns immediately after the reset.
  • The switch is physically damaged or the boot is missing (rain in the switch = the next 2800).
  • The alarm shows up repeatedly with no one near the unit.
  • You have 2800 together with any other alarm in the log — clear this one first, then work the other.
