Daikin Mini-Split Error Codes and How to Make the Unit Show One
Most Daikin fault codes are not on the screen until you ask the unit for them, and the code list depends on which family you have. Daikin publishes two retrieval methods. Method 1: hold the remote's Timer Cancel button for five seconds until 00 appears on the temperature display, then press Timer Cancel repeatedly — a short beep means no, two beeps mean the first digit matches, a long beep means both digits match and that is your code. Method 2, for codes Method 1 does not reach: press the centre of the Temp button and the Mode button together, select 5C (service check), press Mode, and step the left then right digit until the long beep. Not covered by this page: every other Daikin system. That includes the FTXS-L and FDXS-L series, the FTXB and FTKB series, the Aurora and Cirra lines, the FTXM / RXM series, VRV equipment, Daikin Fit and any ducted or light-commercial unit. Getting the code out of the unit
Both manuals document the same two approaches, with only the button names differing by remote generation — the ARC452 series labels the key TIMER CANCEL, the ARC466 series labels it Timer Cancel. The important part is that the unit confirms a match with a sound rather than by displaying the code directly, so you are listening as much as looking.
- Look at the indoor unit first. The operation lamp blinks when a protection device on the indoor or outdoor unit has activated, when a thermistor is malfunctioning, or when signal transmission between the indoor and outdoor units has failed. A blinking lamp is the cue to go get the code.
- Method 1 — Timer Cancel. Hold Timer Cancel (labelled TIMER CANCEL on the ARC452 series remote) for five seconds.
00appears on the temperature display. Press Timer Cancel repeatedly to step through codes. A short beep or two consecutive beeps mean the displayed code does not correspond; a long beep means it does. - Get out of the mode. Hold Timer Cancel for five seconds again, or leave the remote alone for 60 seconds, and it returns to normal.
- Method 2 — service check, when Method 1 comes up empty. Daikin states plainly that not all error codes are displayed by Method 1. On the ARC466 series: press the centre of the Temp button and the Mode button at the same time, select
5Con the LCD, press Mode to enter service check, then change the left-side digit with Temp up/down until the beep changes, press Mode, and change the right-side digit until the long beep. Both digits confirmed by a long beep is the code. Press Mode for five seconds to exit. - On the ARC452 remote, Method 2 starts differently: press Temp down, Temp up and Mode at the same time to enter diagnosis mode, then work the digits the same way.
- Write the code down before you do anything else. On a multi-split, the manual notes that an indoor unit's code can take precedence in the remote display over an outdoor unit code, so the code you see is not always the whole story.
FTX-N series codes (SiUS041638EA)
The table below is transcribed from "Error Codes and Description" on page 59 of SiUS041638EA, which is the complete published list for this family — twenty-nine entries including the normal state. Codes marked system-down are ones Daikin flags as displayed only when the system has actually shut down, rather than while it keeps running in a protected mode.

U4 and U7 are different faults and are easy to confuse. U4 is the indoor unit reporting that it cannot get good data from the outdoor unit; U7 is a communication failure between two microcontrollers on the outdoor board itself.

A5 is worth reading twice on a multi-split: in the RA indoor list it is freeze-up protection or heating peak-cut, and in the outdoor list it is anti-icing control for an indoor unit. UH, anti-icing control in other rooms, has no equivalent on a single-zone system at all — it exists because one outdoor unit is serving several heads.
What the code does not tell you
Both manuals follow every code with a troubleshooting chart, and those charts are written for a technician. They open the electrical compartment, check LED A on the outdoor PCB, measure between numbered terminals on the indoor terminal board, rotate the outdoor fan by hand, inspect the power supply waveform, and end at "replace the indoor unit PCB" or "replace the outdoor unit PCB". Every one of them carries the same caution: turn off the power switch before connecting or disconnecting connectors.
GridComfort publishes the code meanings and the retrieval procedure because those are the parts an owner can act on — knowing whether the unit is reporting a thermistor, a communication fault or a compressor problem changes what you tell the service company, and it changes whether the call is urgent. The diagnostic steps themselves stay with the technician, and refrigerant-circuit codes such as U0 (refrigerant shortage) are not a homeowner job under any circumstances: EPA Section 608 certification is required to service an appliance containing a regulated refrigerant.
When to call
- Any code you retrieved that is not
00. A Daikin only holds a code because something tripped. U0refrigerant shortage, or any code where the outdoor unit is short-cycling or icing — the refrigerant circuit is certified-technician work.- Any repeat of the same code after a power cycle.
- A code that is not in your family's table. That means your system is a different family, and the right manual is the one for your model number.
- Daikin US support, or the dealer named on your installation paperwork, for anything under warranty.

How do I make a Daikin mini-split show its error code?

What is the difference between U4 and U7?
U4 is a signal transmission error between the indoor unit and the outdoor unit — the indoor unit cannot get usable data from outside. U7 is a signal transmission error on the outdoor unit PCB itself, between the main microcomputer and the power module on that board. Different faults, different repairs, and only the letters are shared.
Why does my multi-split show a code I cannot find in the outdoor list?
Because it is probably an indoor code. The multi-split manual notes that an indoor unit's error code may take precedence in the remote controller display over an outdoor one. Check the RA and SA indoor lists as well, and note which head you retrieved the code from — on a three- or four-zone system that matters.
Does a code mean the system needs refrigerant?
Only U0, refrigerant shortage, points at the charge, and it appears on the multi-split outdoor list as a shutdown-only code. Adding refrigerant is not an owner job in any case: under EPA Section 608, servicing an appliance containing a regulated refrigerant in a way that could release it requires a certified technician. Most codes in these tables are thermistors, boards, fan motors and protection controls, not charge.
