Dehumidifier Runs but Isn't Collecting Water
Nine times out of ten the dehumidifier is doing exactly what it should. GE's support page names the most common cause: the relative humidity in the room is below the set humidity level — the unit is satisfied, so the compressor idles and only the fan runs. The second cause is temperature: ENERGY STAR notes that below 65 °F frost forms on the coil and output falls; Frigidaire, GE, and hOmeLabs all set 41 °F as the floor where the unit stops extracting. Then come defrost cycles (compressor off, fan on, for up to an hour), a dirty filter, and a drain hose quietly sending the water down a drain while you watch an empty bucket. Refrigerant loss is real but last on the list, and it's not a repair you can buy for a $250 unit.

Check these first (five minutes)
- Read the display correctly. On most units the number is the target humidity, not the room's. Midea's FAQ spells it out: "The readout on the unit is the Humidity the unit is set to, not the temperature." Put a hygrometer next to the unit. If the room reads 45 % and you've set 50 %, the unit has nothing to do.
- Room RH is already at or below the set point → lower the set point to 40–45 % (Frigidaire's recommended range is 40–60 %; ENERGY STAR calls 30–50 % optimal) or switch to CONTINUOUS. Done.
- Check the temperature. Compressor dehumidifiers extract less water as the air cools. ENERGY STAR: "Frost can form on the condensing coils if the air temperature drops below 65 degrees, and may negatively affect the performance of the product." Frigidaire, GE, and hOmeLabs all give 41 °F as the low limit; the FFAD7033R1 manual says between 41 and 59 °F the unit "will start defrosting automatically, stopping the compressor for a brief period while the fan operates at high speed."
- Basement at 58 °F in October → expect half the water you got in July and long fan-only periods. That's physics, not a fault. A unit rated for low temperatures helps; so does running it mid-day.
- Look at the coil. Pull the filter and shine a light. Light frost right after startup is normal (Frigidaire and GE both say it clears in 30–60 minutes). Solid ice with the compressor off is a defrost cycle; wait an hour before deciding anything.
- Ice that never clears → airflow (step 4) or, rarely, a low charge (step 8).
- Filter and clearance. Frigidaire: "Check your filter and make sure it is clean." GE and hOmeLabs say the same. A clogged filter drops airflow, which drops coil temperature, which makes ice, which stops water collection. Wash it in warm water, let it dry, refit. Keep the unit away from walls and furniture so air can circulate — ENERGY STAR's placement note.
- Is a hose connected? With a continuous-drain hose on the back, the bucket stays empty by design. Follow the hose. Midea's rule: the hose "should never be higher than your drain point on the unit" — an uphill hose backs up and can trip the bucket-full switch with an empty bucket.
- Bucket and float. A "Full" light or a P2/Eb code with an empty bucket means the float isn't seated. Pull the bucket out and slide it back in firmly; Frigidaire's manual describes this as the float-switch reset.
- Power cycle. GE's advice for a unit that won't collect: "disconnecting power to the appliance for 30 seconds and reconnecting the power." Cheap, and it clears a confused control board.
- Still nothing after 24 hours in a warm, humid room with a clean filter? Now suspect the sealed system. Put your hand on the coil with the compressor audibly running: it should be cold within a couple of minutes. A compressor that never runs, or a coil that stays room temperature while the compressor hums, is refrigerant or compressor — see below.
Brand-specific notes
Frigidaire
Frigidaire's support article lists the same causes as above and adds a fan-speed tip: in warm, humid rooms run HIGH; in cool, dry conditions a lower fan speed lets the air reach a lower dew point and collect more water. Its codes for the sealed system are EC and F0 — see the EC/F0 page. AS/ES are sensor failures.
GE
GE's 30-second power reset is its first step for any fault. On 50-pint models with a pump, P1 is a pump-out fault (hose not connected, bucket unseated), not a full tray — reseat and reset. E01 is the 70-pint equivalent. An "88" on the display at first power-up is normal until you set the humidity.
Midea (and Midea-built brands)
Midea's codes: AS humidity sensor, ES evaporator temperature sensor, P2 bucket full or mispositioned, Eb bucket removed, E3 unit malfunction. Midea-built dehumidifiers sold under many brand names between 2003 and 2013 were recalled by CPSC in 2016 for fire hazard; check the serial before repairing an old one.
hOmeLabs
Operating range 41–90 °F; auto defrost cycles the compressor off with the fan running "until the frost disappears." Codes match Midea's: AS, ES, P2, Eb.
Hisense
Hisense dehumidifier manuals don't define any error codes — the manual says only to contact customer service if a code appears. The physical causes above apply; anything with a code is a warranty call.
When it's the sealed system
The refrigerant loop in a dehumidifier is factory-sealed. Finding a leak, brazing it, evacuating, and recharging requires an EPA Section 608 certified technician — that is federal law, not a suggestion — plus equipment that costs more than the appliance. Manufacturers don't sell compressors for consumer portables (we checked Frigidaire's current models: no compressor, board, or sensor is listed for sale). So a confirmed sealed-system fault has exactly two outcomes: warranty service, or a new unit.
Repair or replace?
If it's the set point, temperature, filter, hose, or float: free. If it's a sensor or board on a unit under warranty: a phone call. If it's the sealed system out of warranty: replacement. A 35-pint unit runs roughly $180–$250 and a 50-pint with pump $250–$350; a service visit is $100–$150 before parts that mostly aren't sold. Size the replacement for the space — the dehumidifier sizing calculator uses the 2019 DOE ratings, under which yesterday's "70-pint" is today's 45–50-pint class (ENERGY STAR maps old 70 to new 40–45). And if your basement sits under 65 °F most of the year, look for a unit that specifically claims low-temperature operation.
When to call for service
- Compressor never runs, or runs and the coil never gets cold, in a warm room with a clean filter.
- A sensor or control code (Frigidaire AS/ES/E4, Midea AS/ES/E3, GE fault codes that survive a reset).
- Any burning smell, hot plug, or tripped breaker — check the CPSC recall list first.
- The unit is under warranty and any of the above applies.

Why is my dehumidifier running but the bucket is empty?
Most often because the room is already at or below the humidity you set, or because the room is too cold for the unit to extract much (below 65 °F output drops sharply; below 41 °F it stops). Check with a hygrometer and a thermometer before assuming a fault.
How long should a dehumidifier take to fill the bucket?
It depends on room humidity, temperature, and capacity. A 50-pint unit in a wet 80 °F basement can fill a ~1.5-gallon bucket in a day; the same unit in a 60 °F room at 55 % RH may take several days. Slow isn't broken.
Does a dehumidifier work in a cold basement?
Poorly. ENERGY STAR advises a low-temperature-rated model for spaces that typically fall below 65 °F. All compressor units stop at about 41 °F.
Is frost on the coil normal?
Light frost after startup is normal and clears within 30–60 minutes (Frigidaire, GE). Persistent ice means low airflow (filter, clearance), a cold room, or — rarely — low refrigerant.
Can I add refrigerant to a dehumidifier myself?

Why does my dehumidifier say "full" when the bucket is empty?
