What P1 means

Midea portables have an internal pan that catches condensate from the evaporator. In COOL mode the unit tries to fling that water onto the condenser and evaporate it out the exhaust — Midea's FAQ says so directly: "The water is accumulated in an internal drain pan. This water is evaporated and sent out the exhaust hose in the form of water vapor. Occasionally, the unit will need to be drained in humid environments." When the pan reaches its limit, a float trips and you get P1. It is a protection code: the compressor stops so the pan doesn't overflow onto your floor.

Midea documents its portable-AC codes better than most budget brands:

Two things Midea does not say: it does not list E0, EC, F1, or F2 for its US portables, and it does not say P1 clears on its own after draining. The manual's instruction is to restart the unit after refitting the plug.

Midea U window units are different. Their manual uses codes in the form EH(xx), EL(xx), EC(xx), PH(xx), PL(xx), PC(xx) and tells you to wait about ten minutes because "the problem may resolve itself." P1 is not in that manual. If your Midea is a U-shaped window unit, this page doesn't apply.

How to drain it (as the manual states it)

From the MAP08R1CWT and Duo manuals:

1. Turn the unit off and unplug it.
2. "Carefully move the unit to a drain location" — or slide a shallow pan under the back. The FAQ warns: "the water will start pouring out immediately. Keep towels close by in case splashing occurs."
3. "Remove the bottom drain plug and let the water drain away." The plug is low on the back panel, sometimes behind a small cover.
4. "To completely drain the unit, tip the unit back slightly to drain the last of the water."
5. "Reinstall the bottom drain plug" — the Duo manual adds "firmly to prevent leakage before using the unit."
6. "Restart the machine until the P1 symbol disappears."

Continuous drain (so P1 doesn't come back)

• DRY mode, all models: remove the upper drain plug on the back and attach a hose. On the MAP08R1CWT the manual specifies the supplied "drain connector (5/8 in. universal female mender) with 3/4 in. hose (locally purchased)." Route the hose downhill to a floor drain or a bucket; the end must point down.
• HEAT mode (Duo heat-pump models): the manual makes the hose mandatory — "You must install the drain hose when operating in heat mode." The hose can be elevated up to 6 ft (1.8 m) but "ensure that the end of the hose is directed downward."
• COOL mode: most Midea portables keep the water in the bottom pan in COOL mode and evaporate it; the upper port is for DRY (and HEAT). If you run COOL in a very humid room you'll still get periodic P1s unless you leave the bottom plug out with a pan underneath.

Midea's owner manuals don't list part numbers for the drain plug, float, or board, so none are shown. The accessories that matter:

Repair or replace?

P1 is almost always water, and water is free to fix. A float switch or control board that's genuinely failed on a unit past its warranty is the exception, and at that point the math is unkind: Midea portables sell in the $300–$600 range (the Duo at the top), and a service visit is $100–$150 before any part. Under warranty, call Midea. Out of warranty with a confirmed sensor fault, price a replacement before you price a repair.
