Generac Error Codes 2098 and 2099: Wiring Error
Codes 2098 and 2099 mean the control wiring between the generator and the transfer switch is crossed. Generac's diagnostic manual: 2099 is "mis-wired customer connection — low voltage and high voltage wires are crossed"; 2098 is "mis-wired customer connection — insufficient DC voltage on transfer power output." In the support article's words, the controller detects AC voltage on a DC input — "for example, the N1 to 194, or 23 to T1" — and it cannot tell which pair is swapped. Both are red alarms; the unit will not start in AUTO. There is no owner-level reset. Generac's instruction is one line: "a certified installer should inspect the customer connections panel to ensure wires are not crossed." This almost always appears at installation or right after someone has worked on the transfer switch.
What codes 2098 and 2099 mean
Six control wires run between an air-cooled Guardian and its RTS or HomeLink transfer switch, landing on a terminal strip in the generator's customer-connection panel. Generac's transfer-switch article names them: N1 and N2 carry 240 V from the utility so the controller can sense whether the grid is up; T1 carries 120 V to the battery charger; 194 is the 12 V DC feed to the transfer switch coil, "always powered"; 23 is the signal ground side of that transfer circuit; 0 is DC common. Three AC wires, three DC wires, side by side.
Land an AC wire on a DC terminal and the controller sees 120 or 240 V where it expects 12 V. That is a 2099. Leave the transfer output without the DC it should have — a 194 shorted to ground, for instance — and the controller posts 2098. The manual's action columns say exactly that: for 2099, "check for AC voltage on wire 194 at customer connection in generator"; for 2098, "check for shorted 194 to ground" and refer to the RTS diagnostic manual.
Generac doesn't spell out why the controller refuses AUTO, but the reason is easy to see: a crossed N1/194 can put utility voltage on the transfer coil or 12 V on a sense input, and a transfer switch with confused inputs is not something you want deciding when to connect a running generator to the house.

Generac's dealer table labels 2098 "Wiring Error or Transfer Wire Warning," but every Generac table classes both codes as ALARM with a red LED — the word "warning" in the display text doesn't make it a yellow warning. Reset procedure (as the manual states it)
There isn't one. Generac's article gives no reset sequence for 2099 and states: "Generac support does NOT recommend end users attempt to modify or service internal generator or transfer switch wiring." Clearing the alarm without correcting the wiring simply brings it back on the next utility-sense check — and the controller is refusing to run for a reason.
What an owner can do is establish when it started and who touched what:
- New installation? The generator was just commissioned and has never run in AUTO. Call the installer; this is their correction under the installation warranty.
- Recent work? A panel upgrade, a new transfer switch, a solar interconnection, a repair after storm damage — anyone who opened the transfer switch or the generator's connection panel could have swapped two wires. Call whoever did the work.
- Nothing changed? Then something physical did: water in the transfer switch, a chafed wire, a loose terminal touching its neighbor, rodent damage. Still a technician's job, but tell them it appeared spontaneously — that steers them to the switch enclosure rather than the terminal strip.
Step-by-step diagnosis
- Note the exact code and the day it appeared. 2099 says AC on a DC wire — a swapped pair. 2098 says the DC transfer output is missing or shorted. Both point at the same terminal strip, but the technician's first test differs.
- Establish the history — new install, recent work, or nothing (above). This is the most useful thing an owner contributes.
- Do not open the transfer switch. The utility side of an ATS is live at 240 V whenever the grid is up. Generac's article is explicit that end users should not service this wiring.
- Do not clear and run in MANUAL "to see." In MANUAL the generator will start and produce voltage. With the transfer circuit miswired, what the switch does next is unpredictable.
- Call the installer or a dealer. The check is a multimeter on wire 194 at the customer connection — AC volts present means 2099's crossed pair; no DC means 2098's short. From there they trace the pair back to the switch. It is typically a short visit.
- After the fix, the technician clears the alarm and runs a utility-loss test (utility breaker off, unit transfers, house powers up, utility on, unit retransfers and cools down). Ask to watch it; you'll know what normal looks like.

A wiring error needs no parts — it needs two wires moved. The fuse is listed only because a technician chasing a 2098 will check that the 7.5 A controller fuse and the transfer-switch fuses are intact before tracing the 194 circuit. Transfer-switch fuses are switch-specific and not listed.
Repair or replace?
Neither. This is labor: a service call to move two conductors and test the transfer. On a new installation it should cost you nothing — it's the installer's mistake. The one situation where money is involved is a transfer switch with water or rodent damage inside, where a replacement switch is a real expense; a dealer who finds that will show you the damage.
